Anthony LINDSAY is thought to have been a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (_____) LINDSAY of Stepney, London, England. According to the St. Dunstan's church records, Anthony was born to Samuel and Elizabeth Lindsay __ __ 1705. Ship building was the prominent industry of Stepney during this period and there is evidence that Anthony and his father were shipwrights who built ships, or parts, thereof.

Stepney was one of the poorer parishes where many of the unskilled laborers,who worked in seasonal jobs, such as agriculture, and the textile industry also lived. There was a large concentrated Irish community in the area. There were, also,many Scots living there. There were fewer Scots than Irish and much less concentrated.

John H. BURGHER, a descendant, visited St. Dunstan's in June 1994 and was givena guided tour by Rev. John DRAPER. The Reverend said, "Sailors would come tothe church to pray for safe passage at sea."

There are many memorials to various persons inside the church. The church was somewhat damaged during the London Blitz of World War II.

Anthony LINDSAY was transported to Annapolis in the MarylandColony from Newgate Prison in London 12 April 1735 aboard the ship,"Patapscoe," captained by Darby LUX. Newgate Prison was notoriously famous as a debtor's prison until things were changed by John HOWARD, a famous English reformer.

HOWARD's efforts shed lighton this terrible practice against the poor and its practice evenually ended. People were put in Newgate for both serious and petty crimes, alike. For example, a David LINDSAY, Gentleman, was sentenced to jail and reprieved on transportation to America for entering France without a license!

AnthonyLINDSAY was also reprieved upon transportation, and it was not for stealing as the record would have shown that offense. Until the actual record can be viewed, we will never know, for sure, what caused him to be deported as anundesireable citizen.

Papers are said to exist that shows Anthony LINDSAY to have followedthe shipwrights trade in the Maryland colony.
